CRISIS | STRUGGLING | STRESSED | HEALTHY

We have all been in all of the areas in this spectrum. Sometimes it can be difficult to navigate out of the crisis “red-zone” on our own or even with the ones that we love. Below are some tips and tricks to navigate a behavioral health crisis.

1. Assess

Make sure you are safe, and the person experiencing the crisis is safe. Is the person in immediate danger of hurting themselves or others or Property? Do you need emergency assistance, is the person already experiencing a physical crisis? Do you have time for a phone call with 988? (Add link here to 988 website) Can you remove any distracting or exacerbating circumstances (people, noises, environments)?

2. Do's & Don'ts

Do’s: Use a calm voice - avoid overreacting -express support and concern - move slowly - offer options instead of taking control, “would You like me to open the door” -announce actions before performing them - give space.

Don'ts: Don’t promise anything - don’t promise keeping a secret - don’t promise police will not be called - don’t make judgmental comments - don’t argue or try to reason - don’t try to handle the situation alone (make sure someone else is aware and present when possible.
